Hilary Sykes Bids Pendragon Farewell

22 December 2016

Our Corporate Services Director, Hilary Sykes, is retiring as director and Company Secretary on 31st December 2016, after 22 years with the company.

Bidding the team farewell on her last day in the office, Hilary comments:

"As the year closes, it is also the close of my time with Pendragon, after 22 years.

"From junior lawyer to the role I will shortly leave, I have enjoyed the unique privilege of sharing the Pendragon journey, clocking up over three decades' involvement, from my time as an outside adviser in the 80's pre-"PLC" days, through to mega-expansion and consolidation, to today's digital retail world.

"What stands out for me is our "can do" attitude, resilience and willingness to challenge convention, plus the huge dedication and eagerness to learn which marks out our successful teams and individuals.

"I am immensely grateful for the opportunities Pendragon has brought my way, and the chance to meet and overcome some daunting challenges for our sector over the years. Working with great people, for a great company, in a great industry - who could ask for more? I have learned an immense amount, and am glad to be able to use the skills and experience I have gained here, in the Charity sector, where I will be volunteering for various causes around poverty and homelessness.

"I want to thank all I have worked with, especially Teresa and all my team, for your support and patience with my pursuit of excellence (which sometimes goes a bit OTT(!)).

"My special thanks go to Trevor, Martin and Tim: thank you for making Pendragon an exciting place to be and for trusting my advice.

"I wish you and all the team continuing success with the business and with the great opportunities you have, to excel and thrive, long into the future."

Interim Results June 2016

This Interim Management Statement for Pendragon PLC, the UK's leading automotive online retailer, covers the period from 01 January 2016 to 30 June 2016.  Unless otherwise stated, figures quoted in this statement are for the six months ended 30 June 2016.

Pendragon Flies the Retailer Flag in Top 100 Women in the Automotive Industry

14th July 2016

Pendragon PLC, the UK's leading online automotive retailer, is celebrating a double success as two of its female leaders were announced as among the most influential British women in the automotive industry.

Corporate Services Director, Hilary Sykes, and Head of Marketing Communications, Victoria Finn, both made it into the list of 100 names.

An initiative by Autocar, the Great British Women in the Car Industry project has been set up to encourage more women into the automotive industry and to address the challenges they face in both entering and progressing in it.

Released today, the announcement follows an event held by Autocar in central London to debate and discuss the issues involved. The initiative is backed by Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Direct Line Group, Ford and Jaguar Land Rover. Additional support comes from Gaia Innovation.

Nominated within the Executive category, Hilary is the only female Executive Director within a UK PLC motor group, and has been closely involved in the Pendragon group's expansion for over 30 years. A veteran of all things legal for motor franchising, as well as her role within the Executive team, Hilary is a long-term supporter of the wider motor retail industry, through the RMIF's National Franchised Dealers' Association.  Hilary was an external corporate lawyer for the Group before joining as Company Secretary in 1994, becoming a Director in 1999.

Nominated within the Communications category, Victoria was recognised for her work in the company since joining in 2006. Rising through the ranks to take her current position in 2014, Victoria leads communications and marketing projects for Pendragon PLC, including Evans Halshaw, Stratstone, parts business Quickco and Pendragon Vehicle Management, the company's fleet and leasing side.

Hilary comments: "I am honoured to be recognised within this listing of the Top 100 Influential Women. I come across so many talented and dedicated women working in the automotive industry and should like to see more progress in removing barriers to their career progression. This initiative is an excellent way to demonstrate that the opportunities are there for women within the automotive sector, which is, unfortunately, so often considered to be a male orientated world. It would be great to see more women progress careers within this industry and I hope this listing helps provide some inspiration."

Victoria comments: "I am honoured and surprised to have made it into a list of such inspiring and influential women! The automotive industry is, admittedly, male dominated, but hopefully such great initiatives like this will make young women see the wealth of opportunities available in the industry and encourage them to pursue a career. Equality is a huge part of our values here at Pendragon PLC and I look forward to a future where more women lead the way in the industry."

Jim Holder, Autocar's Editorial Director, comments: "We have started this event to stimulate debate about the attractiveness of the industry we love to work for everyone. At present, women are underrepresented in the automotive industry, but we believe that a positive focus on the numerous opportunities that a career in the industry can offer can have a real impact on reversing that trend."

Stratstone Land Rover Cycles Coast-to-Coast to Raise over £2,500

3rd March 2016

Stratstone Land Rover Stockton is pleased to announce that two team members have endured the elements to raise over £2,500 for charity.

Cycling 'coast-to-coast' across the UK in just two days, David McIntyre, Head of Business, and Eric Redpath, Regional Manager, raised funds for the Born Free Foundation as part of the JLR World's 'Kenya Do It' challenge.

The two-bike convoy, along with their Land Rover Discovery support car, set off on February 27th just after 9am and ended their journey before 4pm the following day. Over the weekend they reached the Hartside summit, battling through snow and sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of over 1,900ft.

The 142 mile cycle took them across the UK, from westerly Whitehaven to Sunderland's east coast, where their fundraising efforts ended in beautiful winter sunshine at the Roker Pier Whitehouse.

David comments: "Although somewhat tender, I am delighted to say that I survived the challenge! We were really lucky to have some good weather over the two days, and it only snowed twice. The route itself was torturous at times, particularly the climb to Hartside summit at the end of the first day but it was all for a good cause! I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported and sponsored me for my Coast to Coast cycle."

The money raised by the duo will go towards the work the Born Free Foundation does to halt the extinction of animals, by protecting rare species in their natural habitat via education and animal rescue.

You can still donate to their fantastic cause at www.justgiving.com/David-McIntyre4 and see pictures from the ride on Stratstone News.

Welcoming Evans Halshaw Car Store Bristol and Norwich

25th January 2016

On Monday 25th January 2016, Evans Halshaw opened the newest additions to its used car brand with Car Store Bristol and Norwich, creating new jobs in the area. Car Store signals an alternative take on the traditional car dealership by offering a buying environment exclusively for online customers.

Evans Halshaw Car Store Bristol is located on the same plot as Makro on Cribbs Causeway Estate, with Car Store Norwich located on the same plot as Makro on Broadland Business Park and are the fourth and fifth locations to carry the Car Store name, joining the other stores in Birmingham, Slough and Chessington.  The opening is part of the group's impressive growth strategy which will eventually include 40 new retail outlets over the coming years.

Car Store Bristol and Norwich will serve as a local 'click and collect' style pick-up point for www.evanshalshaw.com's 1.5m online customers taking advantage of its Move Me Closer and Sell Your Car services. By utilising the brand's Move Me Closer scheme, customers are able to browse 20,000 used cars from Evans Halshaw dealerships across the UK and have their preferred model moved closer to them to view.

The Sell Your Car service means customers can book a car valuation appointment online or over phone, and following a face-to-face valuation, Evans Halshaw will buy any car for a great price - even if you are not purchasing a vehicle. Again making it more convenient for customers to sell their cars too.

The company believes that people are ready to adopt a more convenient way to shop for and sell used cars.

Stuart Foulds, national franchise director said: "There has been a strong demand for the Move Me Closer service from customers in South West England and the East of England so we invested in destinations that could serve those customers at a location more convenient to them.

"Car Store Norwich and Bristol, are quite different to anything else offered to car buyers in Norwich and Bristol, and our first example in the South West and East of England of an alternative retail format that offers a combination of convenience, value and choice for the modern customer."

The store also includes a dedicated area where customers can access and browse over 20,000 used vehicles from BMW, Vauxhall, Ford, Volkswagen and Citroen to name a few. Of the initial four opportunities created, Evans Halshaw are currently still recruiting for a Used Car Sales Executive, and those wanting to apply should visit www.jobsatpendragongroup.co.uk

Evans Halshaw's Move Me Closer Scheme crowned Delivery Initiative of the Year

25th September 2015

Evans Halshaw is celebrating today after the Move Me Closer initiative won Delivery Initiative of the Year at The Hermes Retail Week Supply Chain Awards which took place last night in London.

Competing against fellow retail giants ASOS, River Island, Decathlon and Watchfinder, Evans Halshaw impressed the panel of industry experts by demonstrating it is leading the way in retail supply chain excellence with the automotive industry's first click and collect scheme. One of the judges commented; "Evans Halshaw won because the judges felt it introduced an innovative delivery solution that could transform its sector.  Move Me Closer is a paradigm breaker that is genuinely putting the customer at the heart of its service."

The Move Me Closer scheme enables customers to browse 20,000 used cars on www.evanshalshaw.com and when they find a vehicle they're interested in, Evans Halshaw arrange to move the vehicle from one dealership, to a more convenient site at no additional cost or obligation to purchase. Since its launch in February, thousands of customers have taken advantage of the service.

CEO, Trevor Finn commented: "We know that many of our customers do the majority of their research online and that visiting a dealership is often the last stage of the process rather the first, as in days gone by. With the success of Click and Collect on the high street, it seemed an obvious development that automotive retailers should follow suit and bring greater convenience to its customers. We're absolutely delighted Move Me Closer won Delivery Initiative of the Year in the face of such stiff competition. With 120 dealerships it's no mean feat to make Move Me Closer possible for our customers so a big thank you to the many teams across the business that make all our moves happen."

Evans Halshaw Selects Birmingham for Flagship Car Store

1st September 2015

Evans Halshaw has selected Birmingham as the location for the new used car brand, Car Store. Located at Waterlinks Motor Village in Aston, Car Store Birmingham opened its doors today Tuesday 1st September, with almost 300 used cars on site, with access to a further 20,000 as part of its Move Me Closer scheme. As the first step in this exciting growth plan for the business, Birmingham Car Store is the first of 40 new stores announced by Pendragon CEO Trevor Finn, designed to transform the customer experience.

Trevor Finn said: "With the retail landscape in the UK changing, we decided to create an environment that would address the modern consumer's requirements - the desire for wide choice, outstanding value and great service, all at the customer's convenience. All these things have been brought together within a modern retail environment for our used car customers.

"We plan to expand our footprint considerably over the months and years ahead through a programme which will see us embracing new retail formats in areas where we currently have little representation. Birmingham Car Store is the exciting first stage of this programme.

He added: "Due to its thriving economy and large metropolitan area, Birmingham was a natural choice for our first Car Store and its size means customers have a great choice of used vehicles."

Dealer Principal Mark Townsend, who has welcomed 35 new team members to the site as part of the move, added: "This new store puts the customer first and is designed to make the process of browsing and buying a car easier and more enjoyable."

The new retail environment at Car Store has been designed to make customers feel relaxed thanks to bright and comfortable seating and a light, spacious setting.

Mark continued; "When you walk into the Car Store, the first thing you'll notice is that there are no cars inside the retail space. In fact, it's been designed to feel as relaxing as possible, an area where people can enjoy a coffee and ponder their options once they have browsed the vehicles outside."

Evans Halshaw Car Store is located at Waterlinks Motor Village in Aston and is officially open from 1st September. For pictures from the opening, stay tuned on http://www.evanshalshaw.com/news/

Evans Halshaw reveal British driver's biggest motoring mishaps

20th July 2015

Evans Halshaw have recently carried out a study with 2,000 drivers polled, revealing that Britain's drivers have much to learn when it comes to driving and car care basics. Of the 2000 polled, the average respondent passed their driving test 22 years ago, with nearly four in ten admitting to forgetting everything they were taught in driving lessons.

Andrew Waggott, Head of Aftercare for Evans Halshaw commented: ''The longer you have been driving the easier it is to forget basic rules and many drivers do become complacent over time.
''Not every car is exactly the same, so it's important to know the basics before driving any vehicle. And when you purchase a new car, you should take time to familiarise yourself with all the controls and warning lights.
''For those unfamiliar with the maintenance basics, we offer a 40 point Vehicle Health Check at all Evans Halshaw dealerships. We've also produced 'Hands On Help' range of films showing those with a little more technical know-how some 'how to' guides on basic car maintenance.''

Other Motoring mishaps revealed by the research include:
1. Leaving handbrake on whilst driving
2. Not knowing which side the petrol cap is on
3. Mounting a kerb whilst driving
4. Not knowing how to open bonnet
5. Using the wrong fuel
6. Running out of fuel mid journey
7. Driving wrong way down a one-way street
8. Driving on wrong side of the road
9. Turning window wipers on instead of lights
10. Not knowing you had to inflate tyres

Christmas is a time for giving and this year Pendragon PLC, the UK's leading automotive retailer, teamed up with local councils to try and help those less fortunate over the festive period.

The 'Gift of Christmas' scheme gives team members the opportunity to buy a small gift for a child in crisis. Team members who want to take part are then supplied with a name and age range for the child.

Evans Halshaw Citroen in Mansfield supplied a van for the day and Santa's little Helpers went out delivering presents. After initially taking 50 names from Mansfield and Ashfield council, the Annesley-based events team began approaching other councils after almost 100 team members requested to take part. Some even requested to buy multiple gifts meaning they could extend the reach to other councils including Newark and Sherwood.

Trevor Finn, CEO of Pendragon PLC said: "We've been totally overwhelmed by our generous team members who have really embraced the 'Gift of Christmas'. The office has been awash with gifts and people are already asking about next year. It's great to end the year on such a high."

Mansfield and Ashfield Councillor Mick Colley commented; "We think it's fantastic that Pendragon have introduced the 'Gift of Christmas'. Staff at the Council work with many families who have found themselves in distressing situations throughout the year but Christmas is a particularly hard time as they can't always provide gifts for their children. We see first-hand how much it means when a child receives a gift that they weren't expecting and the team can take great comfort knowing they have really made a difference."

Evans Halshaw refurbish biggest car showroom

6th November 2014

Evans Halshaw, the volume brand for Pendragon PLC, today unveiled a recently renovated master showroom - its website. The newly refurbished website is now fully device responsive meaning every customer will enjoy the same browsing experience across all digital platforms.

Analytics show the number of visits to EvansHalshaw.com on mobile devices is five times higher than it was in 2010, along with over 700,000 additional visits per quarter from tablets that weren't around four years ago, the website enhancements have looked to address this.

These figures are also supported by recent research from the Office of National Statistics, which show one in two (84%) 25 - 54 years olds depend on the internet to research products or services prior to making a purchase. A 26% increase in the past seven years.

Victoria Finn, head of Marketing Communications and leader of the project team that updated the site explains: "Almost half of the visitors to the website now come via a mobile or tablet device and we only expect this to keep rising. Feedback from our retailers has also reflected this with an increase in visitors to the forecourt who've taken the time to research online first.  The updates aim to make the research process fast and responsive on every platform with reviews and video content allowing our customers to make well informed decisions."

"Today's buyers expect more from car dealers than ever before and dealerships remain integral to this so along with the new website, we've also invested in training, introduced free Wi-Fi across all of our sites and extended opening hours to 10pm for the telephone enquiry line - it's about offering a whole package of services for choice and convenience for customers."

The launch of the new website comes after the company's interim management statement revealed Evans Halshaw, outperformed the prior year and visits to Group websites (also incorporating Quicks.co.uk and Stratstone.com) increased by 16.8% in the third quarter.

Pendragon supporting Hope for Tomorrow

11th September 2014

Hope for Tomorrow was founded by Christine Mills MBE after losing her husband David to Cancer. One of the many stresses the couple endured was travelling from their home to the Oncology Centre. Her dream was to help alleviate some of the stresses and strains that cancer patients endure whilst going through treatment.

In 2007 Hope for Tomorrow launched the world's first Mobile Chemotherapy Unit (MCU) in a unique partnership with the NHS. These bespoke Units go out into the community to save patients the long distances of travel and waiting times. There are currently six MCUs on the road, which can travel five days a week throughout their counties of operation, and have the capacity to treat up to twenty patients a day. The units are currently operating in Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, East Kent, Berkshire and parts of Dorset.

So far the units have given over 4,500 treatments and saved patients and their carers over 140,000 miles of travel. Three legends from the world of motorsport Sir Stirling Moss OBE, Sir Jack Brabham OBE and Derek Bell MBE are patrons which have enabled the charity to build strong links to the automotive industry.

On Tuesday 20th May we went along to the launch of their seventh Mobile Chemotherapy Unit at Grantham and District Community Hospital in Lincolnshire. They were blessed with a wonderful sunny day for the launch of 'Elaine', which has been named in memory of the wife of Phil Anyon, a senior member of the Mark Master Masons in Lincolnshire, who sadly passed away from cancer. The unit is likely to give treatment to the areas of Grantham, Spalding, Louth and Skegness.

At Pendragon PLC, we are proud to take part in a Charity Challenge, raising £260,000 to buy and run another unit in support of their cause. So far we have done charity tug-of-war, corporate events, a fun run, onesie days, and superhero dress-up! There have been some fantastic fundraising efforts across the group throughout the last year. Since we began our charity challenge, we have raised over £65,000 meaning we are one quarter of the way towards buying and running a new chemotherapy unit.

Comprehensive Refinancing and Maturity Extension Announcement

25 April 2013

Pendragon is pleased to announce the agreement of a comprehensive debt refinancing, which is expected to complete next week. When completed, this will considerably extend the maturity of the Group's debt, eliminate costly and restrictive legacy debt, and places the Group's finances in a stronger position for the future.

The refinancing consists of a new £175 million 6.875% 7-year bond issue, which was priced earlier today, and a new £145 million 4-year revolving credit bank facility provided by four banks and expiring on 30 June 2017. The margin on the new bank facility will initially be 3.5%, but will reduce as the ratio of net debt to underlying EBITDA (after stocking interest) falls, and will be 2.5% when that ratio is under 1.5x.

The Group will repay and cancel its legacy high-coupon debt private placements, the cross-currency swaps associated with them, and its existing bank facility, all of which were due to mature in June 2014. The costs associated with that repayment and cancellation, and other transaction costs, are estimated at £12.9 million.

This refinancing exercise extends considerably the Group's debt maturity.

Trevor Finn, Chief Executive commented "We are delighted to announce the refinancing of the Group which brings stability and simplicity to our financial structure. We will be repaying our costly and restrictive legacy debt, and considerably extend the maturity of our debt arrangements. I am pleased to welcome our new bondholders as stakeholders. The Group remains on track to achieve its net debt: underlying EBITDA target of 1.5x by the end of next year"

Annual Results 2011 released

21 February 2012

Pendragon PLC, today reports full year results for the twelve months to 31 December 2011.

Trevor Finn, Chief Executive commented:

“Pendragon made good progress in 2011 despite turbulent economic conditions, achieving underlying profit before tax of £30.8 million, an increase of 22 per cent over the prior year and over three times the underlying profit of 2009.

The Group has benefited from strong focus on maximising returns and the success of its self-help initiatives within its three key business sectors: aftersales, used and new.   Encouragingly, used car performance continues to be a high point for the Group and will remain a key strategic area in 2012.

Our internet presence with Evanshalshaw.com and Stratstone.com is an important differentiator for Pendragon in the market and has driven our strong aftersales, used and new performance.  The year ahead is set to be challenging, but given our recapitalised balance sheet, healthy cash generation, clear strategic goals and robust operational management we expect to maintain our momentum into 2012.”
